Greg Weaver and I had a long conversation about this, provenance, processing, and the (to my mind) vital role that DSD256 has to play in the future of analog LP reissues just recently. He's published it over at his the audio analyst at the following link:
Fair warning: this video goes on for some 1.5 hours. You may want to take several sessions to see and hear it all.
On the other hand, it covers ground that Greg and I consider to be crucial in extending our readers' understanding of the issues involved. Developing those really does take some time.
Greg comments:
"As well as discussing the merit and concerns over the pending Class Action lawsuit filed at the end of August against MoFi, I've asked Dr. David W. Robinson, Editor-in-Chief of Positive-Feedback, to share his experiences and understanding of DSD, the Direct Stream Digital recording process used for mastering records that MoFi – and many other mastering houses—have adopted. Please don't be daunted by the running length of today's conversation. Take it in smaller bites over several viewings if need be. It is REALLY worth your time.
